Nantucket - Figawi Sailboat Race for 27 years

For about 27 years I’ve raced from Hyannis to Nantucket for the annual Figawi Race, which is Spring Break for older adults.  I started wearing a coconut bra and grass skirt each year, perhaps to help the warm winds blow in May.  This year it was warm, but there wasn’t any wind.  I always race with my good friend Brian Cunha and we have lots of laughs from the Hyannis Yacht Club to the tent parties, Lobster Trap (or is it Lobster Pot Restaurant) boat parties and finally this year an excellent widow’s walk deck party overlooking all of beautiful Nantucket Harbor.  We see friends we’ve sailed against for 27 years including Jack Desmond, Bob Chicati (whose name I can’t spell) and all of the other pirates.  After taking a video of the tent party, I finally realized that this weekend is the wildest time all summer.  Thank you B.C. and everyone for kicking off summer with a great weekend - the following has been written by a hungover author who is still smiling.

Loud Cell Phone Talkers on the train

Since I travel to NYC many times a year, I look forward to being on The Quiet Car on the way home, but there’s always someone who sits in the quiet car and is NOT quiet.   Even though there are several signs hanging above the aisle letting everyone know it is the QUIET CAR.  What I hate the most are the people who get cell phone calls and then proceed to go to the front of the car to carry on the loudest conversation.  Recently while in the ladies room, this guy was talking so loudly on his phone that when I said something to him, his response was, “Am I talking too loud?” When I started to tell him I could hear him while in the ladies room, he held out his hand to me and told me I was bugging him.  TODAY on the news there was a woman arrested on a train for talking too loudly.  I believe she was in the quiet car.  I’m so happy.

Jury Duty with Homer Simpson

I had jury duty in Lawrence, Mass., recently, which is 23 miles away from my home.  Since I had to be there at 8:30 a.m. I left my house at 7:25, and just made it into the Court House at 8:30.  I was about as excited to be there as I am when I have to do my taxes, but the courthouse was actually beautiful with a glass dome ceiling.  As I entered the the Jury Pool room, I handed the clerk my paperwork and notice a Homer Simpson talking toy on the top of his computer.  Which, of course, I asked if I could push it.  It was too early to remember what Homer said, but everyone in the room turned to look and the Jury Pool clerk gave me a good number.  All of us ended up being excused, so we went home early.  On the way out, I asked to push the other talking toy.  Always pay attention to the toys.
