9 Degrees and Clueless People

I think something is wrong when I get into my car and the temperature reads 9 degrees.  I find it easier to deal with triple digits, when it’s 100 outside, but 9 degrees.  I know we’ve been very lucky this winter, but I just would rather deal with the heat.  The other thing that’s been bothing me lately is while waiting in line and in the last year FOUR times, some GUY decides that they can’t wait any longer and runs in front of me to the next open register.  In most cases, I’m so stunned I don’t say anything, but recently, I said to a certain RUDE guy, hey don’t do that, I’m an author and I’ll put you in my next book as the RUDE guy.

Christmas at the beach barefoot

Just returned from doing three book signings and spending Christmas at the beach. Christmas Eve was spent with new friends attending an outside service beside the ocean, under that stars, with 800 people holding candles and singing hymns in Hawaiian.

On Christmas morning I woke up to find people spread out on a blanket with stuffed stockings and wrapped presents.  I said to them, “Do you know how cool this looks?”  I took a picture for them.  Further along the beach, found a three foot high Christmas tree wearing a Santa hat and heard people singing Christmas songs while on their paddle boards.  Later, found Santa, sitting on a beach chair reading his list.  I told him he did a great job.  He told me that the reindeer drive him crazy.  As I walked to a friend’s beachfront home, I realized that I had spent the entire day barefoot.  I gave my friends a fake snowman, which might have been the only one on Maui.

Paddle Boarding in December as an Elf

My friends at SUP East Coast Style donated their paddle boards last Saturday during the annual Marblehead Christmas Walk.  We all dressed up as elves and on one of the first cold mornings this fall, paddle boarded into Marblehead Harbor.  I had my favorite green board, but forgot my rubber wet suit booties so instead did it in a pair of platform boots.  This was a whole new experience, but what a blast.  Seeing the crowd from the water, the sun reflecting off of the empty harbor and just having a great time, once again doing water sports.  Check out the short video:

Jacqueline Whitmore’s newest book

A very good author friend, Jacqueline Whitmore’s newest book just came out, Poised for Success, Mastering the four qualities that distinguish outstanding professionals.  I met Jackie at the Maui Writers Conference because she was wearing Lilly Pulitzer pants, which I ran over to her and introduced myself.  Her first book, Business Class: Etiquette Essentials for Success at Work.  Her first book, is GREAT.  I learned so much and can’t wait to read her new book.  I’m saving it for a flight I’ll take next week.  Here’s the link to get her book.  Be sure to order it for a great gift or for a wonderful treat for yourself.

Things I think I like about Autumn

Today I was telling a friend, that I do like Autumn.  I like Candy Apples, Apple Cider, the smell of fireplaces when walking outside, the foliage.  The sound of leaves below your feet when you walk.  It took me a few weeks, but after having a great summer, I forgot that I do like fall and as I sit here with my little electric fireplace going, I remembered something else, I love down comforters.  Let me think about it for awhile and maybe I’ll come up with a few other things I like too.

Colby Sawyer - A Space in Time

Last weekend was my college reunion.  I won’t tell you which one.  The day I had my first tour of Colby-Sawyer College I fell in love with this perfect brick college high on the hills of New London, New Hampshire.  I learned to hike, ski and make the best friends of my life.  Last weekend I gathered with five great friends, we all talked at the same time, but perfectly understood each other.  We laughed, danced and remembered those times high on the hills of New London.  It was a space in time, which clearly put me on my path.  I love that Colby-Sawyer and all of the people whom I’ve been honored to know along the way.  Thank you God for leading me there.

Build a fund to help Mrs. X

One of my former neighbors on Lee Street recently moved south.  She was sad to leave, but her husband of 15 years wanted to head to warmer places.  We all cried before and after she drove away.  The kids like their school but after two weeks her husband tells her he doesn’t want to be married anymore.  Mrs. X doesn’t have friends in her new town or a job.  Her friends here want to help her, but we’re as stunned as Mrs. X is and I wish I could help her to bring her home to Marblehead.

My Great Computer Assistant

I call my computer assistant, Alex Trebek.  She is a genius and helps me out with everything, especially copy and pasting.   She’s also nursing student, but hopefully she will be my full time assistant when my book becomes a best seller.  I said to her today, wouldn’t it be funny if someday I turned on the TV and she had replaced Alex Trebek as the host for Jeopardy.  She would be a lot nicer too, but as we agreed today, she would still work for me too.  She helps me get so much done and sometimes at the same time, we laugh about me being electronically challenged.

One week left of Summer

Today I gave a speech for the Marblehead Rotary Club on Dreams Have No Time Limit, going for your dream no matter how long it takes.  It was at the Boston Yacht Club and as I sat there looking out on the beautiful harbor, I thought to myself, I’m very blessed to have found this beautiful place that I call home.  Later this evening as the autumn air blows through my windows, I’m sad to perhaps be saying so long to summer, beach yoga and catching waves.  I know it’s not the worst thing in the world, but I just wish it would stay 80 degrees.  Here’s to summer and the freedom of the season.  Maybe I just need to read Beach Chair Diaries!

ST. Margaret’s Convent

Several years ago while attending a writing workshop at Trinity Church in Boston, I met two of the Episcopal nuns, Sister Mary Michael and Sister Marion.  I’ve since become great friends with Sister Marion who used to teach at the Rowland Street School just down the street from my condo.  Today was Sister Mary Michael’s Funeral at St. Margaret’s Convent in Boston.  It was such a celebration of life with lots of music, song and prayers.  I always wanted to visit the convent and the sisters were so wonderful, I felt at home.  I hope to do a writing retreat there and hope that someday you can all meet a wonderful sister like Sister Mary Margaret and Sister Marion.
